It’s working class and it’s real… I wanted to incorporate the movie element, and tell a story about people I knew. The lyrics outline the singer's irritation and confusion with the increasing commercialism of the modern world, where the radio broadcasts 'useless information' and a man on television tells him 'how white my shirts can be but he can't be a man 'cause he doesn't smoke the same cigarettes as me', a reference to the then ubiquitous Marlboro. It deals with the way that two kids–Tommy and Gina–face life’s struggles, and how their love and ambitions get them through the hard times. Regarding the track’s lyrical content, Jon Bon Jovi gave the following statement: “Livin' on a Prayer” is the second single released from Slippery When Wet, and the second consecutive Bon Jovi single to top the Billboard Hot 100 chat, the other one being “ You Give Love a Bad Name”, from the same record.
